Humpty Dumpty was the name of a cannon in the 17th century. it was put on a wall to defend a town called Forfar. It was the main cannon.

An enemy fired and hit it. It fell to the ground smashing it to pieces. And all the kings horses and all the kings men couldnt put Humpty together again. It was changed to an egg in the 18th century lol

Hehe i knew it wasnt an egg lol x

Alternatively, it was a cannon at Edinburgh Castle that when fired exploded into a thousand pieces, scattering bits of it far and wide with whatever was left in a shattered heap at the bottom of the wall.

Or, it was a cannon used at the siege of Colchester during the English Civil War... or maybe it was a poorly designed siege tower used at some point during the same wall... or maybe it was something else entirely... or maybe it was really just an egg!
