Gaelic has been in Scotland for at least 1500 years. To call it Irish, is a bit like saying that Moscow is still ruled by Vikings.

Well, English is at least a corruption of their name. Moscow hasn't been particularly Norse for a long time. England at least still speaks a language which evolved from Anglo-Saxon.

I wouldn't say the English were particularly German, but they do have some German and French traits to them - mainly through later contact.
