The Real Meaning of Mother's Day
Mothers' Day Proclamation: Julia Ward Howe, Boston, 1870
Mother's Day was originally started after the Civil War, as a protest to the carnage of that war, by women who had lost their sons. Here is the original Mother's Day Proclamation from 1870, followed by a bit of history (or should I say "herstory"): Mother's Day Procolamation, Julia Ward Howe |

In the UK Mothering Sunday (or Mother's Day as it is increasingly known) is held on the third Sunday of Lent. Over here it is a hangover from the pre-reformation days (prior to the mid-16th century). In the medieval period it was customary to make a pilgrimage to the Cathedral (the Mother Church) of the diocese. I remember being told that as time passed after the Reformation the previous Catholic notion of the pilgrimage gave way to visiting your own Mother.
I had not fully realised that Mothering Sunday had a different tradition in the US in so far as the date differs so dramatically. In 2007 we are now inundated with adverts to spend considerable amounts of money on Mother's Day in the form of cards, flowers and presents. The only connection with the more traditional Mothering Sunday now is that the date here is still tied to Lent. |

Hi there
Just like the Church to pee on these special days and make them their own. If it was the Church itself and the virgin Mary that the day was devoted to then its Mary's day still. It only developed later into Mother's Day for all. I prefer the US version. The words of that proclamation go deep. And much needed in this day of the current (yet again) brainwashing of young men into giving their lives to serve the ambitions of a bunch of elite swine. ![]() Who else is gonna get more pissed than a Mother. (Hm, now where did I put my AK47 ... ) |

Last Mother's Day I remember hearing two guys on a Sports Talk radio show comparing notes on how much they planned to spend on jewelry for their wives. That's right, not their mothers, but their wives.
They way they told it, if your wife has borne children and is therefore a mother, it's a given that you'll buy her an expensive gift for Mother's Day. The only issue is how much to spend. (They were talking $200-$300) Not at all healthy. |
