Slave No??? has highlighted that the origins and date of Mother's Day in the USA are totally distinct from the origins of the day in Scotland and for that matter the rest of the UK.

Our Mother's Day is tied to Lent and is a hangover from the Medieval idea of pilgrimage to the Cathedral (or Mother Church) of your diocese on Laetare Sunday. On Mother's Day the Catholic Church still uses rose (or pink) coloured vestments on this day instead of the more penitential purple coloured ones. I can only surmise that visiting your own mother replaced the Cathedral pilgrimage after the reformation at some point.

In contrast in the USA it seems to be linked to the US Civil War.
