Well, does Deacon Brodie or Burke&Hare ring any bells? Do a net search, why should we give you all your references?

Question for Andy-13

Hello, Andy-13. You said there were gangs in Edinburgh but not of the same notority as the Glaswegian ones. Do you know the namews of any of theses gangs off-hand?
If not, do you know where I should look? I did a web search on Ediburgh street gangs and found some sites on current ones, and on-line newspaper articles, but none of the sources I found really mentioned the names of some of the gangs, or gangs from the 14th-20th centuries. Could you please help me out?

Seen some photos of old Glasgow on another site. There was one of the Brigton Billy Boys leader.....Billy Fulton, after whom they took their name.

There were gangs from Edinburgh but not of the same level of notoriety and if you look at the two main Glasgow gangs they represented each of the two communities-protestant and catholic with many of the latter being of Irish immigrant stock. The gangs were a product of the sectarian tensions that existed in Glasgow and it was those religious divisions that were the main cause of the explosion of gang violence that occured in Glasgow during the 1930s. Edinburgh wasn't an industrial city so it didn't attract the same number of Irish catholic immigrants as Glasgow and the west of Scotland so it never experienced the same level of sectarian confrontation.

Hello, Andy-13, if you have any information about gangs form Edinburgh, could you please help me out? Could you please some of them?

In what way would you like Andy to please them? Isn't that asking a bit much?

I'm not able to provide any information on them anyway because unlike in Glasgow where large, organised gangs composed of Catholics and Protestants achieved notoriety Edinburgh gangs tended to be small scale affairs from the various housing schemes. The Glasgow gangs were made famous in the book No mean city however there was no comparable book that I'm aware of dealing with Edinburgh gangs.

I meant for Andy-13 to please list them, SherbrookeJacobite.

The only Edinburgh gang I know of off-hand is the Keeley Gang.
