The English were the first of Europe’s nations - during the Tudor era - to adopt a vigorous and vibrant nationalism. That entailed a separation from Europe, and that took the form of separation from the Catholic Church (which was doing the whole united Europe thing long before the EU was ever thought of).
The legality or validity of Henry’s divorce is something of a red herring, laws are man made, it was essentially about power. By making himself head of the English Church Henry shifted power from Rome to England, and that is what was of most importance.
