besides of having a really bad typing day, I guess what I was trying to say is that if you not only take away the rebellion as is but also the reasons for the rebellion OR you would assume the rebellion went succesful, then the outcome might have been quite differently.

Though I have to admit the Highlands are not very favouably upporting any industry.

But that's still no reason to treat people like livestock.

There are still some survivors from the First World War, and its fairly recent history, but your not seriously telling me that people today have emotional ties to their ancestors of a quarter of a millenium ago which would lead them to be offended ? I don't think so!
So when do we stop remembering? They were real people who suffered. I am seriously telling you that people do have ties to those ancestors - and now it is you who are showing your ignorance of the Highlanders.

I always have been suspicious of economists

I have known plenty of Highlanders in my time, and they are no different to anybody else in Scotland. They certainly do not mourn people who died a quarter of a millennium ago.

Plenty of people have suffered throughout history, your question "when do we stop remembering?" could just as easily be applied to those who were plague victims (also 'real' people). Of course we don't for perfectly good reason. Its the same for those who died in the 18th century.
