The Lordship of the Isles was held by Clan Donald after the Norse lost control of the western Isles in 1266. The Macdonalds backed Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence, and their Chief, Angus Og was a lieutenant to the Bruce at Bannockburn. The Lord of the Isles (Ri Innse Gall) was based in Dunyvaig Castle on Islay. They controlled all the Western Isles, and a good portion of the Western Highlands.
