Try this site for information. Most of the posters on here are not Scots - and may have little or no knowledge of the Orange order. And those of us who are Scots may have very different views about the Orange Order and its infuence in Scotland.

Here's your history. The Anglicans in Ireland started off an anti-non-Anglican organisation, and later invited Presbies to join when they found they were getting too few members. A bunch of losers then went and imported it to Scotland.
It has bugger all to do with Scotland. |

How can it be an imported culture when the protestants of Northern Ireland and Scotland share the same cultural heritage?A substantial proportion if not a majority of the protestants within the six counties are of Scottish origin.I don't see it as being an organisation whose primary function is to encourage Scots to take an interest in Northern Ireland to the exclusion of their own country but rather its purpose is to celebrate the fact that we are one community with a shared history, traditions and values.

"How can it be an imported culture when the protestants of Northern Ireland and Scotland share the same cultural heritage?"
Because the Orange men were founded in Ireland, and the ancestors of the Scots Irish didn't take it over to Ireland with them. "A substantial proportion if not a majority of the protestants within the six counties are of Scottish origin." And English and Irish origin. Hence you'll see RCs speaking "Ulster Scots", and with Scottish etc surnames, and Proddies with surnames like Flanagan. Addams is an English surname for example. The fact that it EXCLUDED Presbyterians for so long, when the Scots descended Protestants were mostly that, is also a nail in the coffin of any concept of it somehow being "Scottish". Ireland and Scotland have been sharing culture and languages for millenia. "I don't see it as being an organisation whose primary function is to encourage Scots to take an interest in Northern Ireland to the exclusion of their own country" That's why they go on about the IRA etc, who don't attack in Scotland (thank God). The IRA kills people of all religions. |
