I am Canadian, and often people assume I'm American when I travel - I always just figured it was our accent. And we Canadians are different from Americans - just as Scots are different from the English.

As far as what to call ourselves, I refer to myself as a Scottish-Canadian, the vast majority of my ancestry being from Scotland. Made in Canada from Scottish parts.

If my blood wasn't Scottish enough, I purify it every chance I get with some of Islay's finest.

Although not all can be distinguished, some Americans just look "American"... it can be the clothes, the face etc. It probably involves diet, and which facial muscles are used in speech etc. There's no hard and fast difference, but I can quite often spot a good few before their mouths open!

Same language, often the same genes, different nations...

Americans online are obvious, just because they don't know certain everyday things about Scotland that we would. And there are sometimes certain interests which mark them out.

Everybody dang sure knows i am an american because i am from the south (Mississippi). As soon as i open my mouth you hear my southern accent. But i dont care what people think, you either like me for me (no matter where i come from) or you dont like me. And if you dont like me.......well then you can kiss my @$$!!!! LOL

I was attempting to be humourous - Americans spell some words differently than Canadians & the British do. It is a problem frequently encountered with word processor spell checkers - which in Canada are usually set to American spelling as a default. We have to change the settings to British spelling for it to be correct.
