Did you know that many illigitimate children in the 18th century and even some parented children were pressed into slavery and shipped off to the Carolinas and to West Indies on Slave ships and the main port in Scotland was Aberdeen, many rich bankers from England and Scotland had ships that came to Scotland to get these kids as they were praised as good workers, plus many were also sent there by the courts for petty theft, this happened even up until early 19th century,I remember reading this in one of the Scottish magazines in USA which I feel takes more interest in Scotlands history than many scots magazines best magazines to read in Scotland regardiung history of our fair land is The Scots Magazine and Scottish Memories, does anyone know of any on subscription only, and The Highlander is great for historical facts,as for womens rights many households of my fathers generation treated the wife just as they were treated in the olden times, the wife was there to cook and care for her mans needs and have children and care for them, and the women were happy to please their husbands, women never had todays attitude, there was no arranged marriages amongst the poor folk, I can only speak for the mining fraternity, dinna ken aboot the farming and in the islands, only thing many islanders told me they hadnt to do was never to marry a Campbell nor the english nor a Catholic if they were protestants and if they were Jacobites they hadnt to marry a prysbetarian or anyone from Eriskay or a Campbell, nor any Clans they had war against but the worst thing anyone could do was marry a Campbell,
even today some islanders wouldnt waste their breath on a Campbell,Many scotsmen just spread their oats before they were 21, and hadnt a care in the world, its not the first time I have heard the expression I have many kids selling newspapers,I dont think females were respected as much as they are today, and sadly some men havent changed since there grandfathers day,
