Any other sufferers out there? I have had one for two days and would be grateful for any suggestions that work for other people.

I used to get them pretty bad but not had migraine for a while now.

Do you know what triggers yours ?? It was mainly sunlight catching
the side of my left eye that did it to me.

When I did get them I always went to bed and didn't surface for
a day at least and then I would have some tinned tomatoes to
combat the sickness.

Some people say they are not hereditary but I don't agree as my mum
gets them also and my sister.

Have you tried the cold flannel on your forehead ?? and drinking
Feverfew tea helps.

Cool

Hi Pebbles, hope ya feeling better. Have a read of this.

Preventive Treatments

Preventive medications are taken daily to prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks. They are not pain relievers. They work for many individuals by correcting the underlying imbalances within the body believed to cause migraine. All preventive medications take time to start working and before their effectiveness is evaluated, they should be given at least two months to start to work. Preventive drugs include beta-blockers; calcium channel blockers; antidepressants; monoamine-oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs); antiserotonin agents; anti-inflamatory agents and anticonvulsants.

Symptomatic Treatments

Symptomatic medications are taken to relieve the symptoms of an attack once it's in progress. These medications are usually more effective when taken at the first sign of attack. The most common types of symptomatic medications that are available over the counter are Acetylsalicylic (ASA), acetaminophen and ibuprofen. There are many symptomatic medications that are currently available with a prescription, including a class of drugs called triptans.

Triptans

Triptan medications are known to the medical community as 5-HT (serotonin) receptor agonists. These types of medications work on the mechanism of migraine and relieve symptoms associated with migraine such as headache pain, nausea/vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Triptan medications narrow (constrict) blood vessels in the head that are expanded (dilated) during a migraine attack. They are also thought to reduce the release of substances that cause blood vessels to become inflamed and some reduce transmission of pain impulses to the brain.

Talking

I'm not really one for taking drug as a cure as the body has its own ways and usually things happen because the body is lacking in esentials or you are doing too much of something, like work=stress etc.

If you've ever had a migraine headache, you know the intense, makes-you-wann-holler kind of pain a severe attack can produce. Chronic migraines afflict an estimated 23 million Americans, including one in five ESSENCE readers who in a recent survey reported suffering from them. But there is hope for healing those bad headaches. Where over-the-counter cures sometimes fail, a more holistic approach may help ease the pain.

WHAT TO DO TODAY
Because most migraines arc triggered by factors that are under our control-certain foods (citrus fruit, hard cheeses, chocolate), stress or too little or too much sleep. Try these lifestyle changes: * Stick to healthy habits. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, eat a balanced diet, exercise and avoid alcohol (LOLOL) and cigarettes. * Identify food triggers. For one week, keep a headache diary. Record what you eat and drink and when you have symptoms, then look for patterns. * Practice relaxation. Meditate, do yoga or just lie down in a dark, quiet room while you envision your head and neck muscles relaxing slowly.

ALTERNATIVE ANSWERS
Experts say acupuncture is effective in relieving migraine pain in about 60 percent of cases. Treatments take an average of 30 to 60 minutes, (Make sure your practitioner is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.) To enhance the healing benefits, try taking a candlelit bath infused with a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender, rose or rosemary, after each treatment and getting a good night's sleep. For chronic migraines, try using herbs such as valerian and passionflower. The type of herb and dosage needed will vary from person to person, so consult an acupuncturist or herbalist for guidance.
