We all heard of the harmful effects of the sunlight as of late, but there is a positive aspect often overlooked now a days.
Study by Dr. Weil (and others) have advised taking in the sun for 15 min. a day(without sun screen) in order for the vit. D and calcium to be obsorbed into the body. Quote "It may not be a bad idea for everyone to take 400 IU a day in suppliment form, making up the rest of the body's requirement from time in the sun.... Shut ins and people living at northern latitudes in the winter, suffer a deficiency of vit. D a contributing factor to osteoporosis, the demineralization of bones." From "Eating Well for Optimum Health" author Andrew Weil, M.D.
Advice to remember. Only a short amount of time 15 min.

Cool

Hi Talbert, I agree. I for one love the sun and spend as much tim as I can in it. All life on the planet needs the sun. But here are a few other facts on the flip side of the coin.

A base tan protects you?

Any natural tan is a sign of skin damage. "Your DNA has to be under attack before melanin, the pigment responsible for skin darkening, can be produced," explains Nicholas Lowe, a clinical professor dermatology at UCLA School of Medicine. A tan provides an SPF of 2 at most.

You need to wear sunscreen only between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.?

UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn, are at their peak around 12:30 p.m. and are all but exhausted by 2 p.m. But UVA rays, the culprits for aging the skin, are present almost all day long. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to guard against both harmful rays.

Taking antioxidant supplements prevents sunburn?

Some studies show that using supplements with betacarotene may result in a milder sunburn -- but they don't prevent it. Unfortunately, there's no safer way to protect yourself than using sunscreen and minimizing your time in the sun.

I use to fry myself when I was young. The ozone layer was more intact then. Now wun screen and a shirt with ample protection is needed.

(Reflecting on this) I'm in hopes that someone who visits or is a member of Scotland.com and is a shut-in or the like will remember the importance of getting where there is sunshining( a window perhaps) and soaking up some rays. It will benefit them in many ways.
Hey! Love the flags.
