Sugar cravings have often been my downfall. If i start eating a bunch of sugary things, it can throw all my eating habits off and i start finding i'm eating more, gaining weight, craving junk food like BBQ Potato chips and not eating vegetables or fruit, and before long at all i feel yucky.

So many times i've tried dealing with this by telling myself, "okay, self! you're not going to eat sweets today!" And then i find i'm Jonesing like a serious addict, ready to mug somebody for their Ho-Ho! LOL. (I bet you think i'm kidding!)

I've finally found a way of rebalancing my diet far less painfully, and i thought i'd share it for my fellow sugar addicts...

Rather than tell myself i can't eat sugar, now I force myself to eat healthy food every waking four hours.

Okay, i know this sound strange, but it works. And i think the way it works is by balancing out my insulin levels so i'm not craving sugar.

The most important part is the first meal of my day... I need to have it in the first hour. Something like two eggs, toast, and a piece of fruit. I think the protein, especially, helps... so if i don't have a little meat or eggs i try to have dairy like a glass of milk or yogurt or a small chunk of cheese. Soymilk also works for me.

If then i eat a small meal of healthy food or a healthy snack every four hours then my cravings are only about 10% at worst of what they would be if instead i'd had pancakes with syrup for breakfast or no breakfast at all.

When i do get a sugar craving (like the box of chocolates on top of my Armoire starts calling me!), then i tell myself i can have one portion but only after i eat a little meal, and then i go fix myself something. Usually after i eat, i don't want the sugar. Sometimes i do, and then i have a little, but it doesn't create more cravings and i'm fine.

What are your experiences with sugar cravings?
