Hello! I made a post in the New Members area stating that I am writing a Sociology research paper about Scotland. I appreciate any information &/or quality websites you can share!
What are the biggest health issues in Scotland? What are the health problems among the population? Does Scotland utilize a traditional or scientific approach to medicine? What traditional medicines are practiced? Thank you! Char |

hotcoffeelover,
The biggest health issues in Scotland are Cancer, drug abuse and heart disease, but especially the latter.Until recently Scotland had the misfortune to have the highest rate of heart disease in the western world however I think that we have now been overtaken by Finland.Scots in the past have generally drank too much alchohol and had a very unhealthy diet which was high in saturated fats and low in fruit and vegetables however in recent years things have started to change. The Scottish health authorities have run a series of advertising campaigns to encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Also rising incomes have meant that a larger percentage of the population can now afford to eat healthier foods and supermarkets nowadays sell a vast range of health foods which in the past only the better off could afford. The figures for heart disease and many forms of cancer have dropped in recent years and this trend is likely to continue as people finally get the message.Scotland has always been at the forefront of medical research and there is substantial investment into the scientific study of medicine. There are plenty of health stores selling herbal remedies etc. but I don't think these are quite as popular in Scotland as they are in some other European countries. |

Andy,
What websites do you reference for this information? I have only found a few really good websites that give current information. It seems like everything else always wants to go back in history. Scotland definitely has a rich history, but it's the current information I am seeking! Char |

Hotcoffeelover,
I didn't reference any websites for the above. It is difficult trying to find websites that deal with current issues in Scotland rather than historical events however you might find the following site useful http://www.scottishaffairs.org/onlinepub/index.html |
