Here we go!
This from memeory so bare with me. There are two main stages to the Atkins diet. 1) Lipidosis inducing - You basucally stop taking any carbohydrate(CH) for about 2-3 weeks. Be careful becuase, things like fruit have sugar which is CH. The good thing is you cann eat as much meat as you like. You can also eat cheese. This induces Lipidosis which means that the body starts using its fat reserves. Within 1 week you will feel the weight starting to drop off you. For the two to three weeks you musy be vigilant about CH check labels etc as any CH will stop the process. 2)Thereafter you can increase your CH intake but this must be moderate, do this in conjunction with monitoring your weight. You should still be loosing but not so quickly. You will find an optimum CH intake which will aloow you to get to your ideal weight then stay there. This is all based on the fact that our digestive systems have not yet evolved to enable us to process CH effectivley and is still designed for meat. This is why after CH intake we feel bloated and lethargic. To get details about what you can eat in addition to all meats, you would really need to buy the book, but based on this you could probably get by.

not bad Marti.... only a few things that i would like to add or say... the first 14 days is the induction part of the diet... this is the strictest part of the plan... you are allowed up to 20 carbs a day.... like Marti says... be careful though... there are things out there that you don't think about that are carbs... a good deal of the veggies we eat are carbs, all fruit has carbs, juices, flour (bread, crackers croutons...so forth) rice, pasta, potatoes.... like Marti suggested again... get the book that is the best way to know for sure... or you can go to http://www.atkinsfriends.com there is a carb counter out there... this is the hardest part of the diet... basically you are eating eggs, cheese, meat... a small salad... BEWARE: you have been programed to watch the fat... that is not an issue with this diet... DO NOT EVER buy fat free products... they are heavy with carbs.... they use sugar to replace the fat... sugar are carbs in their purest form... another name for lipodosis is ketosis... like Marti said.. it is when your body starts liquifying the fat stores and starts using it for energy... it is for those on the plan a wonderful place to be... most health food/vitamin stores have Urinalysis/Ketone sticks... this is a good tool for making sure you are in ketosis...within this 14 day period you will notice that you have more energy.. you will also be breaking the addiction to carbs and sugar... try also to limit your caffeine intake... the weight will literally start to melt away... i also suggest weighing and measuring to begin with... know what you are starting with... i also have to suggest that you think about having a lipid screening done at the beginning... this is a cholesterol screening.. for me it is as much a means of keeping up with my own health, but a way to prove that the diet is not dangerous and that i am getting better not worse.
i have as of this week... lost 79 lbs... after the first 14 days... you can start increasing your carb intake... only by small increments.... 5 to 10 only... you can also stay with the induction diet for a while longer too... it is not necessary to increase your intake if you are satisfied with what you are doing... i am currently at 30 carbs a day or less... this works fine for me... i am happy with what i am doing. another thing i suggest if i haven't already... VARIETY!!!! do not eat the same thing day in day out.. you will easily get bored... you also can build up an intolerance to certain foods... you have many things you can eat... do it... you can eat beef, pork, chicken, fish... and something else that i think is important to remember.... you have to want to lose weight for this to work.....this will test your patience.... know that upfront... there will be things that you want that you can no longer have... but if you want to lose weight more than you want to eat that particular food... you will be ok. know that this diet will also lower your chances of coming down with type II diabetes... this is a form or diabetes that people over 40 come down with and the stats on this disease is rising all the time... i am a huge advocate for this diet and can talk to you for days regarding it.... so i will stop for now and hopefully you will be able to make a well informed decision based on the information that both Marti and myself have given you... Good luck!!!!!
