Talking

Hello! I am a graduating college student from the US and I will be teaching for three months next year in Scotland. I have to chose the location for my stay and I can't really decide. Glasgow is an option, but there are no direct placements in Edinburgh. What about the Falkirk area? Any advice? I'm looking for a pretty cultural, diverse, and accepting locale that is close to a center with things to do and see. I would love to meet people and get the "low-down" on the GLBT scene in Scotland.

Hi, yankeeteacher and welcome to Scotland.com.

Now, I don't exactly want to malign the place, but I don't think I'd call Falkirk especially cultural or diverse. Well, my brother and sister-in-law used to live there, so I *could* phone them up to ask their opinion, but I think there would be a sound of hollow laughter. Sorry to anyone from Falkirk.

If you hit on Falkirk because of proximity to both Glasgow and Edinburgh, well, you *might* find Stirling a better bet.

I think you might be better off choosing Glasgow or Edinburgh - that is, if it is important to you to live in the Central belt. Bear in mind that one can quickly get from Edinburgh to Glasgow and vice versa.

As for GLBT scene - sorry - I have no idea, but even so, I'd still hazard a guess to pick Edin or Glas over Falkirk.

Also, I'd advise you to post your question in the Moving forum, where similar enquiries from people wishing to relocate have been addressed before - I think you'd find a lot of advice there.

Best of luck.

I agree you need to live in Edinburgh or Glasgow if you want to experience GLBT. Falkirk is a big town ( sorry if you come from Falkirk) Edinburgh has the culture and Glasgow the better gay scene.
I live in Australia now (12 years) but do come from Edinburgh and you could not do better for a city to live in.
Enjoy your stay in Scotland.

Personally Yankee,
I would pick Glasgow over Edinburgh!, The Scene is Livelier! Heres a List of the Top GLB Bars to go to in Glasgow.

Sadie Frosts
(Under Glasgow Queen Street Station)

Revolver
John St Glasgow
Near The Italian Centre

Delamonica's
Virginia Lane
Near The Italian Center also

The Candle Bar
Candleriggs

The Waterloo Bar
Argyle Street

Nite Spots

The Polo Lounge
Virginia Road
(Round the Corner from Del's)

Bennet's
Glassford St
(Near Revolver and Del's)

All these places are within 5 Min Walk from each other!
