I'm not in disagreement with you folks, yet, messages I posted years ago on sites like Rootsweb can be and are 'reactivated' long after their original posting /last posted message. Folk maybe new to FH research come across these old messags after wading through sometimes pages and pages and voila - "Hey! That's my lot".

I suppose I wonder about those who join a forum, maybe post once and then never appear again - perhaps they've lost the address of the site so cannot find their way back? They maybe found it by accident?

James.

Don't have a clue. BUT, if I had a pound for every member who posted once and then was never seen again.... I'd be as rich as Carnegie!

There are probably a number of reasons this could happen... maybe the people in question find what they are looking for elsewhere; or maybe they just didn't get the response that they wanted!

I suppose on some forums, where the membership is a lot smaller than this one, an email can be sent out by the admin to remind people that they registered and that maybe they'd like to check it out again (which would be beneficial to those who maybe lost the web address)... however that would only work if the email used to register is still active (as I know isn't always the case on the forum that I run!)

By observation only rather than any scientific measurement, I think that regulars on any forum of this type - no matter how many members it has - number no more than a dozen or so max (and maybe even less). Then there are those who dip in from time to time, say "hello" and disappear off the face of the earth for another six months or so, before popping back in. After that, the rest are long gone.

I send out the occasional update e-mail to Scotsgait members and usually remember to put in an UNSUBSCRIBE message (from either the update or the site); those who do actually bother to reply are very, very few.

I don't know how ScotSites feels, but I do sometimes get a bit demoralised when I consider how many regulars out of the whole membership there are although, for me, it is just a hobby running the site and there is absolutely no revenue from it.....then I get a wee word of thanks from one of the users and I'm happy again !!

The way I see it is more or less as I said above... I try not to really look at how many people are registered against how many actually post regularly; as long as there are some active members then the forum is doing its job! Having said that, more people posting regularly would be nice!
