Looking for an Edward Macquarie
I have been told that an Edward Macquarie was part of the detachment of Madras Artillery which participated in the capture of the Ile Bourbon (now La réunion) and then of Mauritius (at that time Ile de France) in July and December 1810. His rank was said as being a "matross" (equivalent to private).
The detachment of Madras Artillery remained in Bourbon from July to December 1810, so, according to the dates, he could have fathered my ggggrand father, James Macquarie, born in Mauritius in June 1811, "natural son" of Héloïse Théodore from Saint Denis (Bourbon). Currently, the Civil Status office as well as the National Archives of Mauritius have been unable to find the registration of this birth. Documents of that time are either missing or dammaged. Has anybody heard anything about this man or these facts ? Has anybody information about the presence of Madras Artillery in Bourbon ? The historical record I have already found on the net is very succint, not to say empty. What other historical records about Madras Artillery can be found, from its beginning to its integration into the Royal Artillery ? Thanks for your attention and any answer. Regards. Philippe Jolly |
