I am researching my family tree and have found various spellings. I think that the family was in Dundee from the 1850s but may have moved there from Blairgowrie. I must admit that I am unsure of how to search for those who were born prior to the statutory birth registrations in 1855.
Any helpful hints will be much appreciated.

I've never heard of either surnames, but that will probably make your search easier - so much better than a name like Smith or Robertson or MacDonald!

Have you tried Genealogy Scottish family birth records census ancestry Scotland uk - ScotlandsPeople ? They have Old Parish Records from before the census dates - and you may be able to find info via that site. It's not free, but if you marshall your questions, then the costs aren't too prohibitive.
