Tracing family history, any ideas where to start?

So I have found out recently I have some ancestors from Scotland and I am not sure where to start. I was told by my uncle that my dad's mothers family came from the McLeod Clan on Lewis? He also said when they came to American they changed their name to Lewis. Anybody have an idea of sites I can start with? I'd really like to do my research so when I do come to Scotland I can see where they were from. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you :-)

Do you know what their name was before it was changed? I know that might sound like a silly question to people who think that, if they came from the McLeod çlan on Lewis, they must have been called McLeod... but without that you won't get very far. So where you start is where you already appear to have started: with family. Then have a read of the Advice on Tracing Your Family Tree topic in this forum as it gives a good guide (with some good web sites) to help you with your search!
