Whitburn/Whitborne

I've traced my family tree (Whitburn) way back to 1620s. I believe my ancestors came from Scotland with James I of England, and as "faithful soldiers and servants of His Majesty, were granted lands in Cornwall. The earliest names I have are Richard, William, and Alexander Whitborne but no dates for these. The earliest dates are Judah Whitburn baptized 1630. Zareb Whitburn born 1633. Both in Cornwall. Any advice or suggestions would be SO welcome. Any recommendations for books about the history of this move from Scotland also welcome. Many thanks. And where did the first settlers in Whitburn, West Lothian come from? Denmark? Stephanieruth

The first mention of it is in the 14th century when it was called Whyteboard and a century later in 1452 the name had changed to Whitburn. There isn't any evidence of Scandinavian connections and by the 15th century when the village of Whitburn became established West Lothian was entirely populated by Scots.

No I'm sorry but textual evidence regarding one's family roots from seventeenth century Scotland isn't easy to come by so I wouldn't know where else to look. You've done well to trace your roots that far back - I've only managed to trace mine back to the early 19th century.
