Help wanted genealogy Stuart / Steward
Hello forum members,
I live in the Netherlands and for a while now I've been curious about how far I can trace back my (presumably) Scottish heritage. So far it has been traced back to James Steward, who came here with Hamiltons regiment in the early 18th century and decided to stay here (married in 1706 in Nijmegen, then in 1712 in Bemmel, The Netherlands). I read that it was part of The Royal Scots and that it was lead by the Duke of Malborough. Does anyone have any idea if there is a chance that, through military records, James Steward can be tracked back to Scotland? I'm curious about what part of Scotland he came from and if there is any more info that can be found. And can all Stuart / Stewards be traced back to one common ancestor? I would very much appreciate it if someone can provide me with more information about my heritage. Kind regards, M. Sturt |

M.Sturt, it could be that your ancestor was originally with the "Scotch Brigade" which was raised for the Dutch service and paid by the Netherlands. There were many different Stewarts/Stuarts/Steuarts, this guy is a professional genealogist but will I'm sure give you a good steer as to your best move.
