Update

Just to give you an update on the situation. Ancestry.com are reasponsible for incorrectly saying the record said "Perth, Midlothian". I looked at a photo of the same record on the Scotland's People website, and it actually said "Leith, Midlothian".

Intrestingly another census record, 10 years apart, for the same person says "Leith, Edinburghshire". So is Leith in Midlothian or Edinburghshire ?

Firing from the hip, I think Leith is officially part of Edinburgh and administered as such. It may have been under Midlothian's jurisdiction at one time. Edinburghshire may well have been a name used at one time for Midlothian, in the same way that East Lothian was called Haddingtonshire at one time.

There's an entry in Wikipedia

Dreadgood and Lachlan, Midlothian was known as Edinburghshire until 1921 (just as East and West Lothian were known as Haddingtonshire and Linlithgowshire respectively); so in 1861, Leith would have been part of Edinburghshire tho it didn't become part of Edinburgh until 1920!

I should be given 40 whacks of a wet sock over the bum ! I didn't know too much about that even though I come from Musselburgh !

Mind you, Musselburgh for me was always about Midlothian and when Musselburgh was sold to East Lothian in 1974, I could never adjust. Even now, I address anything to my dad as Musselburgh, Midlothian. Thank God for post-codes !

Musselburgh - East Lothian, but part of East Edinburgh constituency and having Edinburgh post-code - oy gevelt !

The joys of boundary changes! Maybe you should keep addressing the letters to Midlothian as Musselburgh might be sold back again some time in the future!

To add to the confusion, postal addresses retain the pre-74 county names. [google Musselburgh+postal+address and look at the first hits if you want to check -if the PO doesn't know the correct postal address, who will ?]
