Edward MacQuary / Macquarie
In my resarch about an ancestor, may-be the Highland Family History Society could help me.
My maternal G...Grand Father's name is James Macquarie. He was born in Mauritius in June 1811, his mother being French from Saint Denis, Ile Bourbon (now La Réunion) and his father, probably a British soldier. Some one was identified as Edward MacQuary, from the Madras Artillery. There is also another (or the same?) Edward Macquarie who is known as being the first "Australian" getting a commission in the British Army ca. 1811 or 1812. He arrived as an infant, with his parents, in NSW in 1790. The book does not say from where. Edward doesn't appear as a common first name in the Macquarie families originating from the Hebrides. Therefore, in order to get chances of tracing my ancestry, I wonder from which part of Scotland do those Macquarie / MacQuary families come from. |

Are you absolutely certain that 'your' McQuarie comes from Scotland? It is also recognised as an Irish name, too. In those days, the whole of Ireland was also part of the UK, so the records you seek might be in Ireland, even if the McQuarie was Scots!
If you are willing to pay for info, then the Scottish Records Office (General Register Office, aka GRO) might give you the info you require - so long as you have dates etc. There is an equivalent office in Belfast, but I'm not sure if it is still called the GRO or not. Here's a link Genealogy Scottish family birth records census ancestry Scotland uk - ScotlandsPeople Good luck with your research!
