David, Kyle is one of the three divisions of Ayrshire, there's an old saying "Kyle for a man, Cunningham for a -----, Carrick for a coo" forget the middle, could be a woman. Old King Cole has his origins in Kyle, also Robert Burns himself ,"There was a lad was born in Kyle". Black's Surnames gives an Ayrshire origin for the name and has a Walter Kyle in 1424 receiving a safe conduct into England, and a Margaret Kyle with a tenement in Glasgow in 1428, so it's an old name.

Can't think of any monks in Ayrshire, there's a Crossraguel Abbey in Carrick but that's a ruin.

Try, Ayrshire genealogy heraldry and history

wullie.
