I went to school with a lot of girls of Italian descent, with such surnames as Risi, D'Angelo, Dagostino, de Placido, Bianchi - whose families owned ice-cream shops, fish shops and restaurants! Their playpieces were so much more interesting than mine

Unfortunately, we didn't have many Italian-Scots kids at my schools (Campie Primary and Musselburgh Grammar) as they all went to Loretto RC Primary and Dalkeith St Davids RC Secondary. The exception was Tony Brandeschi, son of the chip-shop/cafe owner In North High St, who went to the Grammar.

At my school it appeared that were as many pupils with Italian or Polish or Irish surnames as Scots

As well as Italian Scots, I've got a real soft spot for Polish Scots too and Polish people in general (I think it's the result of the old WW2 cameraderie). I also had a Polish Scots g/f a long time ago - Lydia Stephan (ahhh goes all nostalgic !)

Guys, I think the Edinburgh Tallies mostly came from the south of Italy, I know a wee guy with a chippie in the Borders who complained that "they Glesga tallies called him an African!" the Glesga tallies are mostly from around a town called Barga,in the north where, I believe, the natives talk Italian wi a Glesga accent! Getootamacafe! wullie m
