just a cursory search seems to say that the name is English in origin, meaning from a dark wood - and one theory is that it originates in the English country of Lancashire.

however, Baillie is a Scots name.

Is there anyway the spelling was mistaken during immigration? My great-great Grandfather's immigration records say that he was from Dalbeattie but I have done some research and cannot find anything of his name in that area.

I wouldn't have a clue! The fact that the name is English in origin does not preclude an English family settling in Scotland. It just means that the name does not originate here.

I've seen it written as Bleakely in Northern Ireland.

It may be a variation of Blackley which, according to Black*, is a surname current in Dumfriesshire....perhaps from Blackley in England. A Radulphus Blackley was juror on inquest in Berwick in 1321 and Mungo Blaikley in Hairtope, parish of Crauford in 1687.

Blaikie, derived from Blake, is also a somewhat similar Scots name.

This may also be of some interest: Blakely - 1891 Scotland Census - Ancestry.co.uk

*George F. Black, 'The Surnames of Scotland', 1946
