Having done a little search, it would appear that there is some argument about the name (in its many forms) - from being a sept of two clans, Fraser and Stuart of Bute to being a name from East Lothian and not part of any clan.

You would probably get more help if you posted this in the Clan forum on this site.

I am looking for any help, I am trying to trace genealogy on my family name (today spelling McKamey) possibly spelled differently. If anyone is able to help me please contact via e-mail at the following address:

At a guess, you're more likely to find something under a "sounds like" name.

McKalmey, for example.

And if it's a Scottish clan then we use "Mac" not "Mc". The latter being the Irish.

Another myth being perpetuated there. Mc or Mac do not themselves dictate national origin. A lot of it is down to the fact that earlier writers did not use hard or fast rules on spelling - there weren't any... Even into the 19th century you would see names written as M'Intosh or M'Kay, the M' standing for either Mc or Mac.......

Please do not help keep this outright myth alive.

I have merged both your threads into one as you asked same question in both.

It is best to keep your query in one place to stop cross posting.

As Polworth said you may be better to post in the Clan Forum also, I can understand why you did this.

I hope that someone can help you.
