AITKEN with a RODDEN Connection
I have hit a dead-end with my AITKEN family research, but there is one common thread in some of the earliest generations I have found. This is the middle name RODDEN which appears for my John Rodden AITKEN (m Mary DEVARET) who appears to have come from Dalry, Ayrshire. All three of their children also have the RODDEN middle name - Mary Rodden AITKEN, John Rodden and Daniel Rodden (b. 10 Apr 1884, m Christina McMillan WRIGHT in West Kilbride, Ayrshire). Daniel & Christina emigrated to Australia in the early 1900's. They had six children, with only one perpetuating the RODDEN connection. Other middle names in this family are McNINCH, BOYD and WRIGHT (obviously from Christina's line).
It would seem to me that the RODDEN would be a maternal side surname, probably from his mother's side or maybe further back. Can anyone help with this research or maybe have some ideas on how I can progress it. |

Hello
I did a very cursory search on the name Rodden and the first link said it was of English origin from Northumberland. Northumberland is on the English/Scottish borders, so it is possible that there were as many Roddens on 'this' side as on 'that'! Here's the Rodden family link which may help you get further back with the Rodden line http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/r/rodden.html Good luck with your search! Scottish-based sites which are worth a visit are www.rampantscotland.com and www.electricscotland.com Both are full of information about Scotland, names, clans, culture etc. BUT, as so much of the site is posted without research, I suggest you check any facts with two or more other sites. |
