There is a view that the name may be a variation of Solomon - as in the English Slo(w)man - however, early spellings in Scotland do not seem to support this view. It appears as Sleuthman in a record of 1471 and then Sluthman in 1474. Later records show up as Slumane in 1567 and Slewman in 1574.
