I know that I'm related to a Samuel (Sam) Pentland (later Pendleton) (born 1834) who was married to a Mary Hazlett (born 1835) and moved from Scotland to Belfast Ireland and then to Cherokee, Iowa...does anyone know of any previous relatives of this Clan Pentland relative of mine?
I'm eager to track my Pentland family as far back as possible and find out any other Pentland information, history, etc as possible!!! thanks FaithP |

Do you have any idea where in Scotland your ancestor was born - or are you suggesting he might have been born in Ireland?
If you have dates and a place, you could do an online search via the GRO in Edinburgh. All Scottish births/deaths/marriages are stored there - although early records may be incomplete. They also have many of the old Parish records on file. They do charge, but so long as you have all the information to hand, the cost is quite reasonable. http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/index.html |

Scotland or Ireland...
I do have conflicting information on whether he was born in Ireland or Scotland...so I'm not sure. I assumed the 'he was born in Scotland' sorce was correct since he moved to Ireland from Scotland but that could be wrong too. I know that according to the 1880 US Census Mary Hazlett's parents were born in Ireland though. I've noticed the Census has gotten several things wrong before so I never entirely trust it. Who knows?
This is great I didn't expect someone to reply to me so quickly or have such good informational help. I will check out the site you sent me. FaithP |

Hmmm, I presume you are aware that many Scots moved to Ireland during the time of the Plantation? Some Americans who claim Scots-Irish descent have found that their ancestors who may indeed have been originally of Scots descent, often lived in Ireland for 2, 3 or more generations (at least a hundred years!) - which kind of dilutes their 'Scottishness', particularly if they married into local Irish families!
![]() I'm not au fait with Irish history, I'm afraid - but the following may be helpful. There is a Northern Ireland equivalent to the GRO Scotland, based in Belfast - and Ireland also has a similar organisation, obviously not the same as UK (which includes NI) - as Eire is an independent country. Here's the one for Northern Ireland http://www.groni.gov.uk/index.htm This is an Irish site which may be of help http://www.irishgenealogy.com/ireland/default.htm [Edited by Polwarth on 5th April 2005 at 10:53] |
