Robert Innes, town clerk of Banff, dies 1782. Four years later his wife Margareth Gilchrist passes away. Of their children have two sons gone to Gothenburg in Sweden, one son seems to have gone to America; only their daughter Margaret remains in Banff, Scotland. The two guys who came to Gothenburg were very successful. When Alexander Innes died 1818, he was a rich man with more than 2000 £ Sterling, and owning 1/3 of a ship "Neptunus". In his will, he gave £20 to "the poor in Banff" and £20 to "the poor in Gothenburg".
My wife and I are planning to go to Banff in Scotland next week from Sweden. Are there any local resources where we can find out more about these old ancestors to her? Two things are interesting to me: Would it be possible to find Robert Innes and Margaret Gilchrist´s ancestors in the local archives there? Is there anyone who can give me an idea of what the reasons were for these three young men to leave their home town during the middle of 18th century? Regards, KajA. |

Well I can tell you that Robert Innes and Margaret Gilchrist were married in Banff in Banff County on Jan 3 1740 in the Church of Scotland but they don't have childrens births registered on the IGI.
http://www.familysearch.org/ This website is useful for giving clues about ancestors that were members of the Church of Scotland. Records of the Church of Scotland also called OPR's are found at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk online Unfortunately I can't find any Banff museums or archives listed on http://www.cyndislist.com which is generally the best starting place for any genealogy websites. Doesn't mean they don't have one though and most archives do have some records of the people especially if they were a town clerk. (519) Robert Innes, town clerk of Banff, died 28th December, 1782, and Margaret Gilchrist, his spouse, died 22nd January, 1786, and both ly interred here. This couple's graves are in the Old Banff Cemetary. The following is the "local" family history society but it's in Aberdeen not Banff. http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.c...&scale=1000000 Our Research Centre is at 158-164 King St. Aberdeen. The opening hours are: Monday - Friday 10.00am - 4.00pm Tuesday & Friday 7.00pm - 10.00pm Saturday 9.00am - 1.00pm Our Research Centre, opened in 1987 and the first of its kind in the country, is available for members use. The Research Centre is the hub of the Society's activities, staffed by volunteer members who are delighted to assist you trace your family tree and tell you how to go about it. Facilities include a large library, microfilm and microfiche of the IGI (the whole world), OPR's and census records for a wide area. Research assistance into N.E. Scotland ancestry can be carried out for out-of-area members by Society volunteers, at a nominal charge plus expenses (such as Registrar's fees, postage, phocopies etc.). See our current scale of charges for details. For a research request (members only) please complete our research form. In addition to our own series of publications, a comprehensive range of publications is stocked, including those of other Scottish Societies and the Federation of Family History Societies. Please note that the centre is closed on Aberdeen local holidays. The local holidays for 2004 are: 19th April, 3rd May, 12th July and 27th September

Thanks a lot Mamie!
We´re leaving for Scotland tomorrow, passing Aberdeen on our way up to and returning from Banff. It might be possible for us to make a visit in Aberdeen on our way back to Glasgow. So thanks for the opening times you mentioned ! Kaj A. |

Hello kajan,
I haven't been on the boards for sometime and have just noticed you posting, but I see that you will be already en-route to Banffshire tomorrow! If you do happen to read this you'll find that there is an Innes house & estate near the cost, near Lossiemouth just over into Moray/shire that is west of the coastal town of Banff. Hope you find what you are looking for, unfortunately I didn't see your post before now! Cheers Hut

Innes worldwide!
Agda or Allen (37 yrs), Marion (11 yrs) and Helen Innes (9 yrs) went to Sweden with destination Goteborg from New York, USA in May 1937. It seems as if they were American citizens visiting Sweden, as they returned to USA in August the same year. Their residence is Thomaston, Conn., according to the shipping agent. There’s also a Hilda Innes, travelling alone, that leaves Goteborg in February 1928. She is married, lives in Melrose, Ma. USA. It might be a relation between Hilda and Agda – e.g. mother-daughter.
One other interesting person is Dr Stanley N. Innes, leaving with the ship Gripsholm (a Swedish liner) from New York to Goteborg in May 1935. Dr Innes is living in San Francisco, Ca. No further information on him has been found. There’s a possibility that they are linked to either William Innes (b. 1748) from Banff in Scotland, or to his twin brother Alexander Innes, who lived in Goteborg during the late 1760´s until he died 1818. William went to USA in the 1760´s while his twin brother Alex went to Sweden. Alexander is my wife’s GGGGF. Is there anyone who recognises the three ladies or the doctor visiting Sweden? If my theory is correct, they still have relatives overseas. Regards Kaj Andersson |
