Question

What actual things can i check out personally when i come to Banffshire next year?
I've got the index of surnames for the 1851 census in Banffshire and i'm looking forward at some point at checking out the 1861/1871 census'.
Does anyone know if i can check out these census returns at the local Buckie library when i visit in May or is it Edinborough i have to go to ???
What else [documents, old newspaper articles etc] can i check out in the Banffshire area when i'm there?
I really should make myself a plan of action, get myself organized.
Cheers,Carole.

All Scottish births, deaths and marriages are stored at the General Register Office, New Register House, Edinburgh. You can do online searches, but they charge for the service!

New Register House is at the corner of Princes Street and Leith Walk. There is also another branch in Charlotte Square.

The site has advice on historical searches.

PS Edinburgh is the correct spelling, no 'o' required!

Question what about Banffshire though??

Hello Polwarth,thanks for the reply.
Is it just Edinburgh that i have to check out ?
As i will be in Banffshire for my visit to Scotland ,what can i actually do on site there.
What records are kept locally about the townspeople ?
I've been a constant visitor of the http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk site and have made loads of discoveries of family members.
Now i want to find graves and stories about them and to look around the towns they lived and see if any of the houses are still there - to make it all seem more real.
Cheers,Carole.

Local census records are kept in New Register House, but I would think that a copy might be kept in the local area. All Scottish records are kept in Edinburgh, regardless of where they originated!

BUT, parish records may be viewed in local places. However, some of them are incomplete due to fires, damp etc. Gravestones may still be there, although sometimes old ones have been removed in order to add new, more recent ones to the graveyard.

As I'm a native of Edinburgh, which is obviously a city, I'm afraid I'm not too sure about what may be available in the local area. But any local museum would probably have lots of documents pertaining to specific areas.
