I have a certificate of illegitimate birth for my grandfather, James Inverarity. He was born on 15th March 1864 at Briech Street, Rothes. He was the son of George Inverarity, a farm servant and Elspeth Milne. There is no other information on the certificate to go on. Can anyone help me with George or Elspeth ? Thanks !

I found this on an 1851 census for Belhelvie Aberdeenshire.
/03/27/BAUDS OF CULLEN/ J/GEO/MILNE/H/M/48//CROFTER OF 4 ACRES/BAN/RATHVEN/ J/ELIZABETH/MILNE/W/M//50/CROFTER'S WIFE/BAN/RATHVEN/ J/ELIZABETH/MILNE/D/U//11/SCHOLAR/BAN/RATHVEN/ J/ELSPETH/MILNE/D/U//8/SCHOLAR(AT HOME)/BAN/RATHVEN/ J/MARY/MILNE/D/U//5/SCHOLAR(AT HOME)/BAN/RATHVEN/ $ There is a Rothes in Aberdeenshire. http://genforum.genealogy.com/scotla...ges/34351.html Good luck, Bob |

Thanks for your reply Bob.
While the information you sent to me suggests it is for Belhelvie on clicking on the link you provided all the entries appear to be from an area in Banff which is to the north west of Aberdeen near the Moray Firth coast. That may be quite helpful. Bauds of Cullen is a (now forested) hillside between Buckie and Cullen. It's about 20 miles away from Rothes. The Elspeth Milne you have found would have been about 21 when my grandfather (her son ?) was born. It gives me a possible link to chase up. Thanks ! Colin |
