location of middlestotes? sheriff hall and reedy loch? for ANDERSON family

hi, i am trying to trace more information on the ANDERSON family.

i am trying to get more info on a james anderson marrying a elizabeth ford (no location or date).

they had 7 children, the first 2 born in middlestotes??, 3rd born reedy loch, next 3 born black addertown and the last sheriff hall.

the childrens names in order are:

isobel (b.19.3.1798), john (b.2.8.1800), christian (b.22.9.1805), george (b.16.12.1805), mary (b.28.10.1810), margaret(b. 24.11.1811), and elizabeth (b.21.5.1814)

i am not sure if anyone can offer any ways of finding out more details on james & elizabeth...

i was trying to find where the birthplace of isobel and john was (middlestotes??) but can't seem to find that name anywhere....i thought if i could find that, i'd be able to find info on their parents james/elizabeth (birth/marriage etc).

if anyone can give me any info or pointers, it would be greatly appreciated..as i seem to have hit a brick wall

cheers

Hello, and welcome to Scotland.com!

You seem to have a nice set of mysteries there. The Gazetter of Scotland http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/gaztitle.html does not seem to know of any of the place names. However, when I remembered that Blackadder is a family name (yes, really! ) and searched for that, Google turns up a place named Blackadder Mains OR Blackadder Town, in this record

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blaca.../PS02_232.HTML

Note - that particular record won't be of any use to you, but insofar as it does mention a suitable place, I thought it worth including. So the Blackadder place seems to be in Berwickshire. Unsure if that helps if the slightest!

As for Middlestotes, does the record you have which gives that as the birthplace expand any further with regard to the area in which it is? Silly question, really, as I am sure you would have said. I think you may have to play at guessing any amount of possible spelling abbreviations.

Oh well,

brick wall - meet Celyn
Celyn - say hello to brick wall

Best of luck with the quest!

thanks for the welcome celyn

from the info that i have: blackadder-town, berwick scotland, (which is about 10 miles west of berwick on tweed) as far as i can tell they are all in the parish of edrom.
info i have been given

1. isobel was born in (middlestotes) on 19.3.1798
2.john (middlestotes) 2.8.1800
3. christian (reedylock?) 22.9.1802
4.george (blackaddertown), berwick
5. mary (blackaddertown)
6.magaret (blackaddertown)
7.elizabeth (sheriff hall)
i think they are all in berwick/edrom..

any ideas? maybe the middlestotes/sheriff hall/reedylock(h) are missspellings???

We have trawled through the 1881 Census for over an hour looking for these names in Berwickshire. In Edrom Parish we found 3 of the names, they are of Farms, Sherriff Hall we could not find, so we have Reedyloch, Middlestotes and Blackaddertown. The farm of Reedyloch was down as Readyloch in the census and possibly Sherriff Hall no longer existed at that time.

Hope this helps and Celyn there is always a way through a brick wall.... it is called a door. lol.

Oooh, who's a sarky wee Marhar, then?

Still, that new knowledge should save me bruising my head! ( I have actually walked straight into a door once - it was glass, and I was leaving an office I had visited and just thought - "oh, the sky looks a bit ominously dark out there, looks like a storm coming......BAH! OUCH!" "Oh, a door!" Tried to scurry off with dignity. Failed, I think!

Best of luck to yoshimitsu.

thanks guys, the farms are a thing to look into, what area where they exactly???

i found some info on sheriff hall.....are any of you guys from edinburgh? if so you might have a bit more info, it was either a mining town or just a mine sth east of danderhall... i noticed on a map there is a mining museum between dalkeith and gorebridge and though that might have been the remains of the mine, anyone ever been there?

also there is a mention of a sheriff hall 1 mile east of melville castle (whereever that is!!!!) near george buchans house (whoever he is!!)

well i think i might have found the door in the wall but it's still locked!!!

cheers.

I'm from Edinburgh!

Sheriffhall is usually written as one word - perhaps a google search will bring up something for you...

There's a big roundabout south of Edinburgh called the 'Sherrifhall roundabout'... I recall a lot of building work going on out there last time I ventured into that area of country...

Not too sure if ANY mines remain - but there are many mining towns and villages in that area... even Gilmerton had it's own Miners' Welfare Club... and that ranks as an outer suburb of Edinburgh.

Melville Castle is now a hotel.. http://www.celticcastles.com/castles/melville-castle/
