Hi, I'm wondering whether anyone - and most likely Marhar and Polwarth particularly - can help me. I've exhausted my possible means of investigation, and I feel like I'm going round in circles now.
Firstly, I posted the following about a month ago, but gave an email address which I do not use now, so maybe I've missed an email or two?
My current email address is Dave_MargaretPaterson@hotmail.com.
The posting was -

My g-g-grandfather William Pat(t)erson, born 20.1.1858 at Rumbling Well, Dunfermline, Fife, married Ellen Graham(afterwards Hay) on 6.6.1884 at Dunfermline.
From an old war diary I have, I believe that he had a brother David Pat(t)erson, born July 1853. David was a corporal (No. 12411) with No. 3 Subdivision J Battery 2nd Brigade Royal Artillery. David enlisted on 22.11.1870 and was at Allahabad in 1882.
Anyone have any knowledge of or connections to my paternal ancestors?

General Genealogy - What is the oldest known recorded genealogical entry in Scotland? Has anyone ever done a general search of, say, one particular parish, recording ALL records - with crosslinking?
Where is Rumbling Well in Dunfermline? Is it a suburb, or only a parish? Does it still exist, as such?
Are there ancient parish records that are still held in the parish as against having been moved to central registry in Edinburgh?
I've got lots of other such questions, but that's enough for now.
Frustration is beginning to win, I think.
I'd appreciate any help or comments I may get.
Best wishes to all who are researching their past.
MaggiesBoy.

There is a road called Rumbling Wells at about 1/2 mile from Dunfermline on the A907
We found this in the 1881 Census.
at 129 New Row Dunfermline Fife

Margaret Paterson, age 64, Widow, born Dunfermline
Elizabeth, Dau, age 37, born Dunfermline
William, Son, age 23, Powerloom tenter, born as above

Hopes this is of some help to you

Marhar

I knew you would come through, from the amount of confidence expressed, by one of the other moderators, in your skills and dedication.
I thank you as much as I can, because you've given me that extra line in my paternal ancestry.
It would seem pretty certain that My g-g-grandfather was the William you refer to.
May I stretch my obligationto you, and ask if you can find anything later at that address 129 New Row, Dunfermline, that might give me any further information?
I wish I could get over there to search the available records. Does the census show the maiden name of the widow, or when her husband died, etc?
Sorry if I'm being a nuisance, but it is quite exciting to make another connection like this, as I'm sure that you appreciate.
David Paterson,
MaggiesBoy.
