Question

I can see this is going to take some doing already, Right, here's how it is..

I know who my parents are and I know the names of my grandparents (Cunningham and Hayward) but, I don't know my Grandmothers' maiden name, just that it was the same name because they were sisters, that's as much as I know..

However.. my paternal grandfather's sister's name is Stobo and she lives in Glasgow with her family..

If anybody can help me to get past first base I'd be very greatful.

For anyone other than actual family you haven't given enough clues for us to make any suggestions.

Dates and possible locations are needed. Are we talking births and marriages before 1855 or after? Is all of your known family in Scotland from Glasgow or somewhere else?

To effectively search the available online records you need to have a time period and a location to the parish level if possible. Also any ideas if family was Church of Scotland or some other religion.? This will effect what records may give you the required information.

Also I would check http://www.rootsweb.com for any Cunningham, Hayward message boards as someone may be researching the same family. Once you know which area of Scotland most of your family is from you can check for local Family History Societies many of which have message boards that you can place a query on.

And finally check out http://www.cyndislist.com for a listing of other websites that might assist you in your search. It is constantly being updated and not much is out there that isn't acessible through here.

Thumbs up

Well I found your reply really helpful to me..

I have now found that most of my family on my father's side were from Paisley, Glasgow however some of them apparently moved there from Westport Ireland with the name Finn in the late 1800's/early 1900's and married into the Cunningham and Hayward families, this being because both my Grandmother's were sisters.

Thanks for the names of the sites, they are leading me to other links on the net which might prove to be useful.

You said something about names other than family, I don't really quite understand that, how that can lead to my family background?

I meant that only members of your family could help you with your query as written.

It's best to give more specific information when making a query. As in location to the county but to parish level where possible, dates of birth or marriage but at least whether or not prior to 1855 or after 1855.

Names of any known siblings or parents as this can give clues to family relationships where a traditional naming pattern was used,

The websites I listed for you are only the general ones. With more information we might be able to give you more specific ideas where to look for information. Except I don't know that much about Ireland. I only have one Irish relative that I know of lol.
