im not sure if this is the right place to ask this ,but i am hopeing someone might know. the last name 'Stokes' does anyone know where it comes from,i have been told its either Scotish or Irish im not so sure of either one,i have looked it up on many web sites but every place wants you credit card number lol so if there is anyone out there with 'free answers it would help out alot,thanks alot

In Scotland Stokes seems more likely to be spelt Stocks with the most frequency in Fife.
If you put in the surname at http://www.familysearch.org ITS FREE to SEARCH!! and limit the search to Scotland this is what you get. A few Stokes, mostly Stocks and a few other variations in various lowland counties. The IGI (or International Genealogical Index) database assumes they are all the same name as spelling was not shall we say set until the 20th century lol.
