I was told by someone that they thought the word ( Carter ) ment he was a cart maker or a cart driver, and that the word ( Pathhead ) ment that he was a foreman or something like that. The reason Im asking is that this is the job title my GGgrandfather had in 1822 when he married my GGgrandmother. |

Hello
Are you saying that your ancestor was named 'Carter'... because the origins of the name are as you have been told - but by the 1800s - it would have been his family's name for sometime, ie he was not John the Carter, who then became John Carter - that happened generations before... Pathhead -is a place name of a village in Midlothian and also, I believe Ayrshire... so, could he be Mr Carter who resides/works in Pathhead, rather than a job title? |

I've come across a similar entry on a census. It read..Carter/Pathlead...The clerk from the archives told me it was his job...carter being a wagon driver..pathlead being he was an overseer(foreman)The time period for this entry was 1860.
Hope it helps EJ

I would like to thank both of you for your response. I would also like to say that Im sorry to Polwarth. I should have posted my GGgrandfather's name, which is, James Dickson. I would also like to tell DameWallace that I agree with his statement. I to belive that it ment ( Carter ) Driver or builder of Carts or wagons, and ( Pathhead // Pathlead ) ment Forman, Leader or Overseer of some type. Thanks to both of you. John A Dickson |
