I am interested and finding any info I can on the Mac Greggors. That is who we are believed to come from. My grandfather said we were of Irish, Scottish descent. Grigg is my mothers maiden name. We were told that the name was changed from Mac Greggor to Grigg when they left Scotland and went to Ireland. They came from Ireland to the U.S. in 1786 we believe. Just want to know if anyone can verify that some Mac Greggors changed their name to Grigg when they left Scotland. Sorry I don't have any other info.

Clan Gregor (not MacGregor) have a a site which lists the names that they claim as sept to Gregor. Don't forget that some names are claimed as septs by more than one Clan - although I do not know if this is the case with the name Grigg.
This is the website address, and you should be able to find out more information via their history. I think you should also do a websearch to verify everything you read, as often there are as many explanations as there are people writing historical stuff! http://www.clangregor.com/ There is also no easy way to 'prove' that your Grigg were once MacGregors - without managing to make the link from the US (via the first 'Grigg' immigrant) back through passenger lists etc to Ireland and from thence back across the water to Scotland. Just because you bear the same name, does not mean your family was part of the MacGregors... Only research will 'prove' that fact for you! Best wishes with your research. |
