Hello

Do you have a timescale? Do you have an idea of where in Scotland your Samuel Duff emigrated from?

Samuel Henry Duff, jr

All I have on him is born in 1720, died May 17, 1796, Green Spring, Washington County, Virginia. Married Margaret Montgomery born about 1722, Scotland, died 1812, Washington County, Virginia. Had a son, William B. Duff born 1744, County Antrim or Tyrone, Ireland, died Dec. 21, 1819, Washington County, Virginia.

I will email you an invite to my tree @ ancestry.com if you need more info.

Thanks

Hello
I am sorry, but I am not a genealogist. Living in Scotland means that family records are easily found - just wandering around local graveyards has filled in some 'blanks' for me!

However, I think you need to approach the problem from the Irish birth records. It should be possible to find out where his parents had emigrated from either from Parish records or from passenger lists (although these were often not helpful as they were incomplete) When you know where exactly in Scotland they came from - you could probably do a parish records search - but this may not be possible via the web.

Parish records were kept from early days, but central recording of birth/death/marriage was only made compulsory in the mid1800s, and judging by your dates, this was well after your ancestors arrived in the USA.

Here's a clan map which clearly shows were the MacDuffs were 'based'. But you have to remember that not all Scots families were part of the clan system. But specific family location is often a pointer to whether or not ancestors were members of a clan.

Good luck with your search.
