Although I am no expert, you need to start with the name of a person who emigrated to Australia from that you can start to gather information.
Ask around your family for any information they may have, if you can get an approx date when they left for Australia and from where they lived in Scotland there are lots of shipping records that you can look at on the Internet.
My McDonalds left Scotland for New Zealand in 1840 on the Ship called
"The Blenheim"
That was the point that I started at and from there I have been able to find out much information about their lives and family before and after they emigrated.
I have just found in my local Library heaps of notes that my Great Great GrandFather wrote and which have been verified, he addressed them to his future Grandchildren...bless him.
