Why are some people so funny about food? I work with a 27-year old woman who (unbelievable as it may seem in cosmopolitan London)has never tasted Chinese food, or curries, or anything "foreign". Her idea of an exotic meal is pizza with ham & pineapple... honest!
I took her to the pub for lunch and tried to get her to try something different, so she plonked for the nachos, but asked for them without the chili con carne and salsa... these tortilla chips arrived with just cheese and spring onion and she sat there and picked each bit of spring onion off with her fingers! |

Any ideas on this?
Why are some people so scared of trying something new? Tell me about someone you know who's 'funny about food'...

I am generally nervous to try new foods, unless I know what's in them. However, sometimes knowing what's in them will make me put a distance of about ten miles between myself and the particular food. Since I don't do real spicy foods well (they don't agree with me), I generally steer clear from Thai, Cajun, and Indian-type cuisines, as well as certain Mexican/Spanish-type dishes where hot peppers are used. But, like, if I like what the ingredients are, I'll try it even if it is new. An example of where I looked at the ingredients and ran in the opposite direction is haggis, black puddings, things like that.

A friend of mine I met at college was especially "funny about food". Whenever we had sausage, I saw her scraping the meat out and leaving the tough outer casing. Whenever we had toasted ravioli or large cheese shells, she'd scrape out the cheese/meat and leave the pasta part. If there was ever anything that even might have potatoes, she'd steer clear from it, never giving any reason why. That's all I can really remember of her strange food ideas.
Another friend of mine used to like (and maybe still does) syrup on her pizza and ketchup w/ her french toast. And, then there's my brother who won't touch anything that used to grow in the ground(which is fairly common, though he's never said why), but then says he hates chocolate in any form, and still eats Oreos. I guess my own funny thing about food is my method for eating pizza. I'll pick off all the toppings, eating them piece by piece, instead of leaving them on the side. After that, i'll lick off the sauce and finally eat the bread. |
