Congratulations by the way Babz - you are doing a great job.
Have you ever seen a recipe for Battenburg cake - probably kind of tricky to make but I love the marzipan!!!

Dont know how you'd get that chequer-board effect unless you had a special type of pan? I do love a nice battenburg and like you, the marzipan is my favourite bit!

Um, I'm no expert baker (understatement of the year), but the bad news is that I have dim memories of how to get that chequerboard effect is to make it in bits and, well, given that we're all on computers, I suppose "cut and paste" is a good enough way to put it. Cut carefully and squidge them together, really. I agree it's lovely, but, given that it is so much faster to eat than to make, I'd be far too lazy. I bet Babz isn't though.

And why does this board always end up making me hungry? Not fair.

This certainly brings back memories, havent made one of these since I
was at school. So it took a while to find a recipe that was different, as most of
you like chocolate this is a Chocolate Battenburg which I thought wo go down well.

4oz. Margarine
4oz. Caster Sugar
2 Eggs
4oz. Self Raising Flour
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
------------------------
1 Tablespoon Cocoa Powder
1 Tablespoon Hot Water
Blend these two together
------------------------
Oven Temp. 350 F/160 C/ Gas Mark 3

Grease and line the bottom of a 6" square cake tin and divide in half with a strip of foil.

Place cake ingredients into bowl leaving out the cocoa blend and beat well together.
Divide the cake mixture in half and add the cocoa blend to one half.
Place the plain mixture in one side of the cake tin and the chocolate mixture
in the other side.
Bake for 30-40 minutes.
Allow to cool on a wire tray, when cold, cut in half lengthwise and join
putting alternate colours together using jam.

Most recipes have marzipan around the outside but you can be different by covering
the 'battenburg' with the cream of your choice.

Well, let's see.... Have got eggs, sugar, flour, cocoa powder. Hmm. And if I check the batteries in the smoke alarm, it might be okay to try baking....

No, instead I shall write out 500 times "Stay away from cuisine"
