Besides the names, are there any basic differences between Scottish and American cooking styles or cuisines?

[i]I can only speak from my very limited experience, but the big difference to me was the ingredients. Some of the ingredients used in American cooking, are not available in Scotland.

One example. When I was trying to prepare a Meatloaf, or even meatballs for that matter, I was unable to purchase Bread crumbs with all the seasonings already in it. For instance, 4 Seasons Italian bread crumbs are full of all sorts of stuff to give it a particular flavour. When I asked, I was told they make their own bread crumbs and season it to their liking. Since I have no real understanding what 4 Seasons puts in their stuff... I was at a loss.. lol..

I also add a Jar of Turkey or Chicken gravy to my meatloaf. It helps give it some moisture, making it so much better. I couldn't find that either. To make your own gravy (brown sauce) I was unsure what to use to make it thicker. Here I would have used corn starch or something, but at that point.. lol.. I was like.. Oh god.. lol.. nevermind.. lol..

Needless to say the meatloaf I made was Awful.. lol..

I think because food in the USA is an amalgam of many cultures, there are often dishes with similar names that don't look or taste the same at all,

We don't tend (or my family don't) packet, ready-made sauces. They are available. I just don't use them.

We don't for instance, have that white gravy that Americans eat with sausages and scones for breakfast in some States.

Gravy granules are available, you just need to know what to ask for or where to look on a supermarket shelf. Personally, I start from scratch with the meat juices, a little plain flour and stock.

They may look like scones, but that's where the similarity ends. They are called biscuits, but are not sweet. American biscuits have a different texture and flavour than scones, although you would put butter and jam on them or honey. But they are also good with gravy and my favourite was a Mcdonalds egg and cheese biscuit - the only thing I would eat there.
