heck fellows yer been harsh on linda there.Shes only assuming like most people do that porridge is bland.

me and my 3 brothers were giving nothing but porridge for breakfast while growing up.There are a lot of ways to have it.And everyone seems to have there own ideas on how to prepare it.

i wouldnt worry to much about what oats are used in it to be honest just get a standard bag of oats, most people in scotland use quakers scots porridge oats the most popular brand sold. and incidently owned by a american company.

its about the easiest thing to make and heres how to do it

you use twice as much water as you do oats ie 2 cups water 1 cup oats and quantities there of.

you heat water in a pan to boiling slowly pour in the oats while stirring and just keep stirring about 5 mins till the oats combine with the water.

THJATS IT thats all there is to it.

then you add a flavouring that you like my prefered is to drizzle some pure honey into it stir it in and eat.

some add a pinch of salt, others brown suger you can add cinnamon or ginger or whatever.just experiment till you get the flavour you like.you can also substitute part of the water for milk or all of it but realy there is no need to do this some like it this way however.

and if you want to be realy adventorous cut a pear or apple up or something and throw on top.

Its the easiest thing in the world to make takes about 10 mins in all, and is one of the most healthy foods there is a available, its very filling like nothing else and its perfect for dieting, you will never feel like your hungry having porridge as part of your diet. and is also one of the cheapest foods you could make. Its also very tasty as your making it how you enjoy it.

the important thing is to keep stirring as it cooks or you get lumps

hope that helps ya linda and anypone else

Thanks so much, Kevin and Margaret, for your ideas on how to eat oatmeal. I know the instant kind I like isn't the healthiest in the world..... what you guys have suggested sounds really yummy and makes me want to try it fairly soon. Oatmeal IS one of the healthiest foods in the world, and I'll bet Scotland has fewer heart problems than other nations who don't eat it quite so much, because of it. With the instant oatmeal, I feel hungry within about 3-4 hours after eating it; however, with the whole-grain oats, I imagine it'll keep you going for quite a while, especially with some whole fruits and honey on it. That sounds REALLY nummy!
