A lot of places have breakfast buffet style, just don't select anything that looks questionable! The Black and White puddings are pretty distinctive, sort of medallion shaped and off putting looking!!!!!!

The tomatoes and mushrooms are wonderful! And the UK has about the best strawberries I have ever had and I live in strawberry land! (Oregon)

I was in Edinburgh a few years ago. Stayed at a B&B near the castle. I had the porridge, eggs and beans. Couldn't figure out WHY baked beans for breakfast! Thought there was something unusual about them. No, they were just plain 'ole beans.

have any of you lot actually lived in Scotland???? Twould appear not so down to educating you poor uneneducated folk.

Starter

Porridge:- Nice and easy is Scotts porridge oats made with half and half milk and water. Harder is using oatmeal which must be soaked in water overnight to soften it only use enought water to cover it and then add some milk(not a lot) to cook it. don't forget the salt BUT some prefer unsalted. Eatit with more salt or just about anything else you fancy, sugar, honey, jam, etc. Hisory Lesson:- In days of old porridge was cooked once a week, poured into a paper lined drawer and allowed to set. It could then be cut into chunks and eaten like a cake. Eaten at all meals, not just breakfast.

Main course

Bacon
Sausage fresh from the local butcher
Lorne sausage (Slicing sausage) square or round
Black pudding
Fruit pudding (white pudding is slightly different and does not tend to be eaten a breakfast) Made with suet and mixed dried fruit with herbs and spices.
Fried pancakes ( Drop scones or possibly griddle cakes){Tattie scones are used but are what you would find in an Irish breakfast}
Eggs (usually fried but have em any way you want)
Fried bread
Toast with butter on the side with marmalade or jam to go with what you did not eat along with the main course
Mushrooms and beans are of course optional but were not part of the traditional breakfast due to there availability.

Not forgetting of course the large pot of tea.

P.S. I actually live in England now but will move back one day.

traditional scottish breakfast

Hey,

If your looking for a good centuries old Scottish breakfast then the way forward is:

Warm porridge with plenty of salt (NO SUGAR! JUST SALT!)
and a glass of Scottish Spring water (or milk is sufficient)

Try it, its the best breakfast you'll get!

No. I have never seen anyone eat 'coffee & a bagel to go', unless they were American tourists. Ha! Good luck finding a bagel anyway!

Round my way it's bacon or square sausage on a roll with sauce. Very few variations on that. If im feeling flush, i might get them to throw a tattie scone on it as weel.

I can live with trying oatmeal with maybe some applesauce on it. Most of the Scottish traditional breakfast sounds okay, as long as you fast the day before you eat it. However, the black and white puddings sound worse than haggis and just looking at the recipes for them were enough to make me want to lose my supper! Gag me with an entire place setting!!!
