It depends how you define a computer ! Computers used to be people paid to do mathematical calculations. So it wasn't unheard of for the boss to run away with his computer.

In terms of what we might consider a computer, it would probably have to be Herman Hollerith's electronic tabulating machine, which was essentially the world's first electronic data processor. He won the bid to process the data in the 1890 US Census after smashing the competition because the process was so efficient.

Assistants would punch holes in cards in to accord with data entered on the survey sheets (he got the idea after seeing a train conductor punching tickets) and electricity passed through the holes in the cards and the data was then stored. Incidentally, punched tape was used as recently as the 1980s.

He set up a company selling tabulating machines; obvously the market was not huge at the time, but he did well - his company would later rename itself "International Business Machines" - better known today by its initials, IBM.

the first modern day computer is considered to have been invented by charles babbage in the 1800s...the difference engine

but as mikey says it all depends on what you mean as people have been using machines to work things out since the days of zues

there is a very easy way to find out these things using computers too.....click here for a demo > find out things
