My name is Larry Thayn. I live in San Antonio, Texas. I was wondering if anyone could tell me any information about the Thayn or Thain surname? Does it belong to a clan? Is it it's own clan? Anything would be helpful. My e-mail is....larry@thayn.com

Thain is a sept of the Innes Clan. Here is a little info on them
Clan Innes The Clan Innes is of ancient origin and descends from Berowald who was granted the Barony of Innes by Malcolm IV in 1160. His grandson, Sir Walter of Innes was the first to use the name and received a charter of confirmation from Alexander II in 1226. Alexander, 9th of Innes married Janet, daughter of the last Thane of Aberchirder, and acquired her lands, hence the Innes continued to extend their estates and the family prospered and grew. Sir James, 12th of Innes was chief esquire to James III and entertained James IV at Innes Castle in 1490. Sir Robert, 20th chief was made a baronet by Charles II in 1625, whom he later received at the Port of Garmouth which he founded in 1650. Sir James, 6th Baronet and 25th Chief sold the lands of Innes to the Earl of Fife in 1767 and went to reside in England, only to return to Scotland when he succeeded as 5th Duke of Roxburgh in 1805. James, 6th Duke was created Earl Innes in 1836. Of the cadet branches the Barchets of Balvernie descend from Walter Innes of Innermarkie, son of Sir Robert Innes, 11th of that Ilk; and the Innes of Coxton, a branch of Innermarkie are renowned for building the remarkable Tower of Coxton near Elgin in the 16th century. Thanks to James Pringle Weavers for the following information INNES: Derived from the Gaelic 'Innes' - an island, and such featured in the lands between the Spey and the Lossie granted by Malcolm IV to the Fleming 'Berowald' in 1160. His grandson was first to adopt the territorial name of which lands he received confirmation from Alexander II in 1226. Sir Alexander, 9th Laird, married the heiress to the Thanedom of Aberchirder and by such consolidated his holdings and posterity. Their son, Sir Walter, was chief for 42 years, and dying in 1454, he was succeeded by 'Ill Sir Robert', 11th Laird and the Sheriff-depute of Moray who gained infamy by his wicked ways before expiated much of his sins by founding the Greyfriars of Elgin. His successor was Esquire to James III and entertained James IV with much style at Innes in 1490. Both he and his son, the 13th laird, were patrons of the arts and architecture. William, 15th Laird, sat in the Reformation Parliament of 1560 and Alexander, his successor, was beheaded by the Regent Morton, In 1579 the Privy Council recognized the kindred as a "clan". The 17th Laird resigned his Chiefship to a kinsman, Alexander Innes of Crommey, a grand-nephew of the 13th Laird. Sir Robert, 20th Chief, was created Baronet in 1625, and though a prominent Covenanter, gave allegiance to Charles II and received him in great style at Speymouth in 1650. The 3rd Bt. married Lady Margaret Ker, and through this union, Sir James, 6th Baronet and 25th Chief succeeded as 5th Duke of Roxburghe in 1805 - his son becoming Earl Innes in 1836. The Innes Baronets of Balvenie (created 1628) are descended from Walter of Innermarkie, second son of 'Ill Sir Robert'. Another branch of the Innermarkie line, the Inneses of Coxton, were renowned Jacobites and took part in most of the Risings of the 18th century. On the death of the millionaire George Innes of Stow - a descendant of the Inneses of Toux, his fortunes passed to the Mitchell-Innes family. Sir Thomas Innes of Learney KCVO., one of our greatest authorities on 'clanship', served as Lord Lyon King of Arms from 1945 to 1969. 1 Marhar [Edited by Marhar on 12th March 2002 at 15:44]
